wut? The Brits were hating on the EU for ages and using it as a political punching bag. Merkel being such an easy target was at best the reason for Brexit, but certainly not the cause. And I'd actually argue it wasn't even that.
A big enough country to never have to visit other cultures, far enough away from the rest of the world to not be used to the diplomacy europe has, a glorified view of the wars because they percieve themselves as the heroes (which they were) resulting in a inflated ego. Add the fear of socialist ideas (not socialism) and a sub par school system. Lastly the internet is showing the worst of the worst so you tend to see the worst they have to offer.
