Publically traded companies create perverse incentives that often go directly against what is best for society and the economy.
Having a business that serves a need and makes lots of money isn't good enough in the world of publically traded companies, you HAVE to see growth at all times.

It also creates situations like what happened with Toys R Us where a bunch of financial vultures came in and uses financial meme magic to kill a business that was doing perfectly fine just so they could drain all the money out of it.
