Soviets defended an ally against a vastly superior force supported, trained and armed by all the world powers that mattered, they were better armed, trained and more numerous than at any time during a US intervention. And USSR did not have to sue for peace. Soviets lost the Cold War, sure. But they did better in Afghanistan that US had in pretty much any of your conflicts since 1988

Even though the chinks were getting btfo because they were fighting with sticks, they still exhausted more Jap troops then we did long term, so if it was purely 1v1 against Japan then they would've had a lot more young men to throw into their kamikaze meat grinders.
