Blame the architecture schools. Architecture is an art and is treated like any other art. This means that the art isn't made to be beautiful, but to wake different kinds of emotions.
Students at these schools are told to design with their emotions and symmetry is (I'm not kidding) shunned.

This is very true. Current art situation has its roots in the 50;s and 60's all this sad shit happened during the cultural revolution. People rejected their own cultural heritage, sophisticated art style became passe and it continues till this day.
