Territorial expansion and alleged economic benefit. Its pirchase was approved by the senate in the mid 1800s by a margin of 1 vote, and for a long time thereafter Alaska was known as "Seward's icebox" because it was a dead weight on the US. It wasn't until the early 1900s that Alaska was found to have oil and other important natural resources and only after WW2 was it discovered to be of vital geopolitical importance. As of 2016 the GDP per capita of Alaska (despite having low IQ unproductive native americans as around 30% of its population) was higher than 48 of 50 states, and it has the highest GNP/c.
