Also because of the emphasis on 友達として and after trying to guess what the context might be, I think a good translation for the last line would be "we've been speaking to each other as friends this entire time."

I should've been more clear. A "spice" in this sense is anything added to a food item that gives extra flavour or taste. (Salt is a spice in the same way that a tomato is a vegetable.)
The word for "salty" as in "tastes like salt" is 塩辛い, hence the 辛い.
You could see spicy in this context as "anything not sweet", anything that "stings".
