>no Umlaut Pro-tip for all learners of German and Germans themselves who don't want to play piano while programming due to the AWFUL German keyboard layout:
If you enable the "en-us-international" keyboard layout, you can write Umlaute super easily: ä=AltGr+q Ä=AltGr+Q ö=AltGr+p Ö=AltGr+P ü=AltGr+y Ü=AltGr+Y ß=AltGr+s There's no uppercase Eszett, unfortunately... Q, P and Y are being used here, because A, O and U are already used for á, ó and ú (fuck you) and Q, P and Y are physically right next to them on a QWERTY keyboard. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AltGr_key#US-International
"en-us-international with dead-keys" is a better layout, because your quotation-mark key and some others become modifier keys (dead keys): ä="+a Ä="+A ö="+o Ö="+O ü="+u Ü="+U en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTY#US-International
And then there's also the compose key, where you can combine tons of letters (doesn't work with dead keys): ß=compose+s+s ẞ=compose+S+S ä=compose+"+a Ä=compose+"+A ö=compose+"+o Ö=compose+"+O ü=compose+"+u Ü=compose+"+U en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compose_key#Common_compose_combinations
very nice, but why do germans say "dies sind meine freunde" and not "diese sind meine freunde" is the latter incorrect ? i thought diese could be used as a plural demonstratives
Hudson Hernandez
the former is the correct one. the latter sounds very weird without a following noun >diese Leute sind meine freunde >diese Menschen sind meine Freunde >diese Tiere sind meine Freunde >diese Schusswaffen sind meine einzigen Freunde und ich werde sie bald verwenden
Dude i've been fucking shilling for german for a month now but I guess I will again in case you didnt get the memo
German is the master race of the germanic lanuages why? because of it's grammar, it's orthographie, it's relation to other german tongues, and ironically because of it's difficulty
if you learn German and become fluent you will be able to learn every other germanic languages in incredible speed. Danish you ask? you can learn this halbinseldeutsch of a language in 3 months after becoming fluent in german , are you interested also in Dutch aka sumpf deutsch dialect? Hell you can learn this also in 3 months . Ive done it already
>So is it used for hot things, like food? I think it's more so that English uses hot to mean "very warm" as well as "hot" (and a synonym to "sexy"), whereas we just say something's warm. Varm and het are synonyms for these instances really, but the default native choice is almost always varm. When it comes to food, spicy/hot food is usually just called "stark mat" ("strong food") because of the intense flavour that spices and chilies create.
>Examples tack Det är en varm dag = It's a hot day Spisen är varm = The stove is hot Den är glödhet = It is super hot Elden brinner het = The fire burns hot Varmluftballong = Hot air balloon Maten har en angenäm hetta = The food has a pleasant heat [to it] Min panna är varm, jag tror jag har feber = My forehead is hot, I think I have the fever. Det är det hetaste modet = It's the hottest fashion Det är så varmt och hett = It's so warm and hot
Honestly I wouldnt mind swedish, my linguistics professor told me swedish and danish are just dialects of each other so learning one is like practically like learning the other but danish just have a different counting system is this true?

Only if you look at total vocabulary and not at vocab frequency. Of the 100 most used words in English all are Germanic. (I, you, he, she, it, that, then, there, what, who, or, and etc. are all Germanic)
Grayson Long
A language is a dialect with an army, so who cares.

Everytime I try to use Duolingo I get bored with how slow it is. I once kept up a seven day streak of about 3 lessons minimum and it was still asking how to say "I am" or "He drinks".

Hi lads, i hear that learning some language is easier/better with using schoolbook for native speakers? What can you say?
Chase Smith
that will definitely help. Though I would also use a basic language learning textbook along with the native schoolbooks.

William Moore
You know there are other language than Latin that are old and dead, right? And Latin is older than your "hundreds of years", so why not pick a language that would correspond with your fake vampire age? Besides, why would a vampire speak Latin?

Alright, well because 1. it's sexy 2. it's in my heritage 3. i already speak spanish and sometimes convince myself i'm learning italian 4. "vatican vampire" just rolls off the tongue, and is also some lvl-20-rogue shit
Akkadian sounds cool, and the fact that you can learn it is pretty dope, but that's way too big of a role for me
