Can't speak for the situation overseas, but I'm clueless as to why so many folks hate on South Asian immigrants. I suppose some might take low-paying technology jobs, but most are educated, law-abiding people who preserve their own culture while embracing many American values.

If you're in the Top 1% in India, there's little reason to move abroad: it's far better to live off $30,000 per year in New Delhi than $250,000 in New York. Most Indians I know in the U.S. were middle- or upper-middle class in their home country; one of my friends, who's a doctoral student, lived in a tin shack before coming to America. However, I would wager that most Indians studying in the States are upper-middle or upper-class, with some exceptions. Definitely not the worst of the worst.

I was in a fraternity that had a lot of Indian-American guys. Didn't participate after my first semester, but I'm still friends with a lot of them on Facebook. Quite a few went from being rail-thin to fairly fit in the span of a few short years.
