I think there's a nugget of truth to this. I think people who are frugal either grew up extremely poor, so they experienced the trauma of poverty and continue to act accordingly as an adult. Or, they had/ continue to have issues with energy/motivation/depression. I'm in the latter category, the reason I'm frugal is because I do not have any energy left over after a 40 hr work week, I wish I did and I've tried lots of shit to give myself more pep but it's worthless. So I'm frugal so I can save like a motherfucker and retire early at age 40. And then maybe I can at least live a sort of a half-life for the remainder of my years instead of giving my all to the corporate machine like I do now.

The reason I broke up wasn't the funeral - it was the realization that I was with a person that would always be forever dependent on me even in the case of her circumstances being way more favorable than mine. There have been million examples of the "complaining about the salad" example that you gave. (When I was buying food she would indulge herself, when she was buying she would get an appetizer only etc, anyway doesn't matter now)

Anyway. Here's another story of the UK funeral trip. So around 3 hours before my flight back, I asked her if she needed me to stay more with her. She said yes. So I told her that since this trip was unexpected and I already had a return ticket that I would loose (I paid for my flights), I asked her if would be able to help me with buying the new return ticket back.

She first said OK. Then 10 minutes later she said she's feeling better and I should hurry up and catch my flight and that it's ok and she can be there on her own.

Then, while I was at the terminal waiting, she asked me if I could buy her a ticket to see a comedian that night because for some reason her us credit card would not go through.

That's taking and never giving back guys... And it would be annoying but understandable if it was a "I was taught men should pay". The fact that she cheaped her brother's funeral (and her dad was furious about that), makes it deeper for me. Almost sociopathic, I don't really know how to describe it.

I tried... many times. Though most times I brought these things up I was emotionally charged, so I would come off as annoyed rather than concerned.
I did not criticize about the funeral at all, as that is her own family business. I did criticize her about not being willing to help me with the return flight and she claimed she didn't realize what I meant.

Anyway, it didn't really go anywhere. Everytime she swore she would change, but her "change" was fully superficial. For example, I used to prepare or pay for like 9/10 dinners. I told her that since I 'm paying rent etc, I would be happy if she got us more times dinner or drinks. What ended up happening, is that she would stay later at work, as they have free dinner after 7pm. She would then bring me home her half-eaten dinner from work (she's a vegetarian so... meh).

So... let's have dinner together got replaced by let's eat the office's salad leftovers... except for when I would take the initiative to make or order something. Around this time, I started going out more with my friends (as she'd stay late at work, so why not?). Which pissed her off because now "I prefer my friends over her".

I do not regret breaking up with her. Now here's the question... She left all of her stuff (except clothes) at my place. I don't want her to use my studio as a storage/locker room. Which I bet she will. What do?
