DJT is a Japanese language 勉強スレ for anyone interested in the language, anime, manga, visual novels, light novels and Japanese video games. Japanese speakers learning English are welcome, too.

see it's more like their politeness goes full circle and becomes ironic/condescending

>ヨダレ Dude stop doing that and learn kanji
Gavin Richardson
Is it true that Americans are complete liars and will reply to "How are you?" with "Great" even though they're not feeling great?
Noah Bell
I kind of get it though, like if someone who hasn't lived in Finland for long came and talked to me in understandable Finnish, I'd be pretty impressed. I don't know why the fuck they would choose to learn this language, but cool I guess. Also people generally don't want to be rude to strangers
Ryder Kelly
Alright if you can show me it being written in kanji somewhere I'll memorize it.
I think it is a general custom worldwide that if you want honest criticism, you have to ask for it
Ethan Allen
If you are just learning 遅刻 there is no reason to waste your time learning the kanji 涎 at this point. Or 白血病 for that matter.
John Wood
Dammit none of the sites are working for me.
Alexander Jones
Sure you don't have to say: "wow, your finnish is terrible!" but in the same vein if someone were to talk to me in barely decipherable german I wouldn't compliment them on it when we both know that it's shit. Different strokes for different folks I guess
甘い also has the meaning of lacking in strictness, and soft isn't a bad way to translate it. If you translated 子供に甘い親 as "parents who are sweet to their children" not only would the actual meaning get lost but it would also sound like retarded English. And I don't actually see them talking about his name on that page so maybe it isn't meant to be a pun but I don't know.
I unironically appreciate you doing it in this manner even when I am not asking for it. >>dick and "balls" you should delve more deeper.. Yes, and that'd be your one of your first treasures unlocked.
Even if it is it still wouldn't be a "mistranslation," just some wordplay that didn't get through. I don't actually care, I hate reading translations by other people, but I also hate people who aren't actually translators nitpicking translations for not being literal enough when they claim to know Japanese better than the translator and therefore shouldn't need to be looking at translations in the first place.
It's such an obvious joke though. There's no way they didn't understand it.
Jose Edwards
Something I've wondered about: do the Japanese really do irony at all? Everyone says they don't so sarcasm, but what about, like, aesthetic irony? Or multi-layered post-irony? That sort of thing.
Jeremiah Young
Sarcasm is definitely a thing. Dunno about irony, but honestly the world would be a better place without irony.
Luis Morgan
Maybe they just thought "I'm not that sweet" sounded dumb. t. inclined to agree
Why do you care so much about fucking translations you dont even need shitcunt
Easton Ross
Maybe its quality control
Blake Morales
Maybe you should start doing your own translations. I bet you'd be fantastic at it, and make the true nature of the Japanese language really shine through. You could become the translator that the English-speaking world has always deserved, the only one with a real understanding of the Japanese experience. All the EOPs will look up to you as a messiah.
Jack Ortiz
In reality you can just machine translate and the EOPs will praise you You don't even fucking have to typeset properly, I've seen some horrible things and people don't seem to mind at all.
Adam King
Brb, going to machine translate some stuff and release it as /jp/djt/
I've... seen things you people wouldn't believe...
Lincoln King
Maybe its Maybeline
Nolan Jackson
I wish there was still low hanging fruit for machine translation so that I could try to improve on a Japanese to English machine translation system in my own time.
In fact I know next to nothing about NLP for Japanese. I should look into it.
