Oh, and my salary is about 40k in one of the most expensive cities in the country, so I'm not doing so great. But, I'm optimistic - will kill myself at 35 if I don't make it* by then.

Should have sold it when the speculation was crazy and put that in an index fund so you can live off returns/dividends (The avg is 7-8%, so take 5% each year and put the rest back to counteract inflation) 5% of 500k is 20,000 after taxes, or you can buy a 500k home, and rent it out if you want passive income.

Oldfag here. Financially I'm a long way off, but I at least have plans now (start and build a business). I grew up dirt poor and got nearly bankrupted when my mom died when I was 29. Now I'm happily married with kids on the way, a stable job, and have some serious medical conditions under control so I'm much better than I was. Finances are coming along and are light years ahead of where I was 4 years ago when I was paycheck to paycheck and getting sued for nonpayment of old debts related to mom's medical care and funeral expenses, but life is about a lot more than just finances.
