My uncle recently returned from a business trip to India. Apparently this is actually true.
He confirmed that Indians are some of strangest people he's met. And he's been around the globe his fair share of time.

I've been to India nearly a dozen times. Frankly, if I'm in a rural area or a neighborhood that doesn't get many tourists, I'll stare at other white people, too. We're just an oddity in South Asia. Even if India gets millions of tourists per year, the fair-skinned ones constitute a microscopic minority of almost any city scene.

Outside of Goa and tracts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, you don't see white folk. What's interesting, though, is that the more rural you get, the less fucks locals give about you. I've been to Maoist-afflicted parts of India; entire states where there's been nary another white face in sight. Yet people don't stare, in part because any stranger is an oddity.
