There are multiple religions called Hinduism: the oldest is the Vedic religion, which is nothing like most Hindu practices today. It's mostly your typical Indo-European polytheisms, like Greek, Roman, Celtic and Norse mythology. There's even a god called Dyaus Pita which is directly cognate with the Greek Zeus (Zeu pater) and Latin Jupiter.
More interesting philosophically is the Upanishadic form of Hinduism, which is similar in some ways to Buddhism (but still very different). This is probably where more influences from Dravidians and other natives to the subcontinent come from. I don't know much about later forms of Hinduism.

Just make sure that you stick to the overall theme of the stories i.e. don't make overarching assumptions about characters and change roles i.e. make a villain, protagonist.
