Get back to the room we started in and my friend is still there, I sit down and like 5 guys walk in and close the door behind them.

they are carrying three or four card scanners and just start setting them up on the table not saying anything. they all had these fucked up tatoos on their arms, idk if they were triad but they were intimidating as shit. basically forced us to empty our cards with threats of violence and sign the printed receipts, took photos of our IDs and shit. lost about 5k AUD. whole process took like an hour and we were both shitting ourselves thinking theyd just kill us afterwards.

eventually they agree to let us go, they all leave and the first guy that brought us there comes back in laughing and smiling and saying its all ok and we should take this as a lesson not to get up to shady shit in china. he said he would pay for our taxi home but we just started walking because we were still shitting ourselves. he yelled out that if we called the cops they would know.

my friend and i laugh when we think back on it but man it really was a fucked up experience

What I've found is that the end product doesn't matter so much as the inherently pyramidal nature of the place. The vacation place was at least somewhat up front about their salesmen about how it hinged on scamming people further down the line, although they called it "business" instead of scamming.
