Why are Finnish children still forced to learn Swedish in school?

Because it's customary to learn the language of your overlord.

Anyways I don't think it's that bad. In my opinion if they want to keep it mandatory, they should start forcing that down our throats earlier so people would actually learn. By the time you start studying Swedish, you are in that angsty teenage age and if you are left behind, there's no in way you are gonna catch up unless you put the work, but unfortunately passing the tests is way too easy so you aren't really that motivated to keep up. It's just wasted schooling for a big part of the students. The first Swedish test that will actually require you to put in the work is in university.

No you didn't. This came to be in the 60's and 70's and it was the result of political scheming around reform of education policy. The idiots just haven't managed to make the commonsense decision of repealing the law even after all these years.

I personally like the language and I even have use of it in my own life, but this isn't true for the majority of Finns.

Funny fact, the white dude is the leader of the True Finns party's youth segment and one of the most vocal persons against Swedish language in our schools on the media. He's a real nutcase that one, even appeared on Big Brother once or twice.

It's fucking weird, 10 years ago the only people who did lots of snus were hockey players and some middle aged guys. These days it seems like almost nobody smokes but fucking everybody is using snus.

The finns were never, at any stage in our joint history, made to learn swedish by the swedish state.

Schools in Norrbotten have had periods of quite aggressive Swedification.

All education would be in Swedish only, and speaking Finnish was not allowed in school.

To give them access to important bits of finnish culture. Many of Finland's great artists and writers were finnoswedes or at least wrote in swedish, like Sibelius, Tove Jansson, and even the writer of their national anthem, Runeberg.
