So uuuuh, how many of you people actually enjoy the English language and aren't just putting up with it because it's the lingua franca?

Attached: Stare.png (1920x1080, 1.19M)

>Världsalltet är gränslös.
I assume that 'space' in the original challenge meant THE space as in that endless thing with stars and planets. For that we use 'rymden' (yes, in definite form).
>Rymden är gränslös.

>Jag sakna dig.
saknar*

>Utrymmet är obegränsat
See above for the 'space' thing. Your translation was otherwise correct, just not in this context.
>Rymden är gränslös.
I'm also sticking with gränslös for limitless since it's the translation of it, but your 'obegränsad' would work too (which I'd use to translate 'unlimited' btw).

What I didn't quote was correct for both of your posts. Unironically good job.

Nah, english sucks.
I have learned it after about 14 years of having to use it to talk online and to work. Never really studied the language or talked in english with someone in real life (that's probably why I fucking suck at talking in it).
Now I'm finally trying to learn another language (russian) for the sole reason that I like it, and I'm absolutely loving it.

>è belle
sono belle, it's plural
>Il mio capo
"La mia testa" is a much more common translation.
>(This sounds weird so it's probably wrong)
Mi manchi. In Italian, the perspective of "mancare" is inverted: the subject is the person/thing that is missed, not the person who has that feeling. The same applies to piacere=to like (Mi piaci=Tu piaci a me).
>del questo tempo
in questo periodo
>Puoi vedere?
"Riesci a vedere?". In questions, potere is mostly used for requests (Puoi chiudere la porta?). "Riuscire" conveys the "managing to do" aspect.
>stai venendo
sta venendo (stai is 2nd singular).
>(to be) on the way
(essere) in arrivo.
Btw, you might want to use the plural if by "help" you mean ambulances, reinforcements and similar.
"Gli aiuti sono in arrivo".
>Stai procrastinando ancora
"Ancòra" (àncora is anchor) can mean "again", but written this way sounds like "still". "Di nuovo", however, isn't ambiguous. Stai di nuovo procrastinando, vero?
>Is that where "di" comes in between verbs?
Correct, "Cessa di guardare". But cessare means "to cease" and that's not what I'd use in this context. Smettila di guardare is much more natural.
Also, I feel like I have to mention that "cesso" (I cease) is also a not so elegant noun for toilette and, by extension, "essere un cesso/una cessa" means "being a really ugly guy/girl".
>finì i tuoi compiti
"Finì" is "He finished". 2nd singular imperative is "Finisci".

Hello everyone. Welcome to the /lang/focus thread and my name is Paul. Today I want to discuss cryptophasia. Cryptophasia is the phenomenon of a language developed by twins only understood by the twins. Cryptophasia is a type of idioglossia, which is a language invented and understood only by a very small number of people. It's been reported that up to 50% of twins develop such a language, but they typically lose it by early childhood. I want to talk about two cases in which cryptophasia lasted later.
The first case involves two twins named Poto and Cabengo. These are the names that the twins gave to each other. Their birth names are Grace and Virginia, respectively. These twins did not experience any complications during birth. Shortly afterwards, though, they experienced seizures and their parents and German-speaking grandmother thought they were mentally retarded and minimized their contact with the twins. The twins developed a language that contained a mixture of English and German features. Listen to this clip from the 1980 documentary Poto and Cabengo and focus the English-based words that the twins use. Despite delays in mental development due to their neglect, the twins were able to learn English, and they still remember their secret language.
The second case involves twins named June and Jennifer Gibbons. They were the daughters of Caribbean immigrants and they grew up in Wales. Similar to Poto and Cabengo, these two twins spoke in a modified high-speed version of Bajan Creole—an English-based creole spoken in Barbados—that nobody else understood. The twins didn't speak to anyone except for their younger sister on rare occasions. When separated, the twins wouldn't speak, earning them the nickname "The Silent Twins". The twins were eventually hospitalized and when Jennifer died, June spoke normally to other people.
The Question of the Day. For twins: did you develop an idioglossia to speak to your twin? Let us know what it was like if you remember it!

Why can't I get a cool job that makes me learn a shit ton of languages?

Russian, Mandarin, Persian
Ignore everything else (although French sounds good)

why are you here if you don't want to learn a shit ton of languages?

>Peace Corps
I met a few of them here, good peoples. Those lucky bastards get four months of language training. I just got a handbook and a link to duolingo

I do. But right now I'm muddling my way through Norwegian with no particular drive to commit. I'm sure in three months I'll get bored and start learning Italian or something. Getting past the language slumps is hard.

Getting assigned somewhere that speaks Russian and getting paid to go to school in Russian until you're somewhat fluent and being forced to learn and speak it is a much better drive. I'm sure there's other jobs that can let me do that, but I haven't found a good one yet.

I got assigned to Jamaica so I just got to learn a creole of English. I was actually pretty disappointed about it.

you should stick with russian. But that's coming from a guy that's pretty biased against Norwegian/swedish/finnish. Like is there any reason you guys just don't have an umbrella language for that entire region. would make things a lot easier i would think

>pretty biased against Norwegian/swedish/finnish
can you explain why?

One of the guys I know here wants to do Peace Corps Jamaica. He asked me how much "Jerk Chicken" do you all eat there?
Also, what is the general attitude towards Americans there? And are you Education or Agriculture?

they look like gibberish and it hurts my brain

I'm env/ag. Attitude depends where you are in the country. I've done work on coasts and with sea turtles (outlier, they definitely won't get to work with sea turtles here), and most locals will always assume I'm a tourist. They're usually more laidback and middle class, but the poorer people in the area will usually hate whites because tourists make them second-class citizens in their own home. In the rural "bush", you get people who assume you're a missionary, a german, a chinese man, or cia. I'm in a bigger community that's not even that rural, but I still meet a lot of people that haven't met a white person and have weird ideas. If I do farm work, people literally stare at me because they didn't know a white person had the ability to do physical labor. Everyone's super nice, although pretty blunt and racist. I always get made fun of for being Chinese or Jewish (my heritage is Irish). Everyone in rural areas are super religious. Loud as hell. It's a nice enough place to live if you aren't female or gay imo.

Jamaicans will cook jerk in little grills on the side of the street on Fridays. It's about $4 US for a small piece of chicken with no sides. On PC stipend you couldn't afford that every meal, but like a couple times a week you should be fine.

Are you with a program in Moldova?

Should mention a good chunk of the island is restricted because Jamaica has a violence problem. The three largest cities are all restricted, and some of the smaller ones too. A lot of people get killed here, but if you look the slightest bit like a foreigner you'll only get robbed if you're in the wrong area. In the rural areas you're usually fine.

man wtf

how do countries even get like this?

>look like gibberish
I guess I can understand what you mean. I don't really find Russian pretty though.

Poverty, no education and corrupt governments

Gang violence from the old drug trade and the new scamming trade. A lot of Jamaican gangs form around access to stolen information to make scamming rings. These are the fuckers who call your grandpa and pretend to be you when your father dies to try and get them to wire money. Or they run fake lotteries. They get called lotto scammers here. So they fight over these contact leads sometimes and it gets pretty violent. But if you're not in a gang or go somewhere you're not supposed to be, you're usually safe.

based

Guys, I still can't decide what language to learn.

Because it's not just a language, yeah? You're also choosing a place to live in the future, possibly. Like how I learned English and lived in America for a while.

But it's impossible to pick. You have to look at crime statistics, terrorism levels, public safety, quality of healthcare, life expectancy, wages and work? But also culture, food, music, people's mindset and the nation's character, whether you'd enjoy walking their streets and so on.
Even if I only look at European countries between Italy, Germany(Austria), Spain, France, it's just too much. Too much. I feel completely paralyzed. One nation might be great at several things but completely unacceptable in another category. Maybe I shouldn't learn anything at all, this is so stressful
