We have two mandatory languages. First is English, second is German or Spanish. You can also pick optional third and fourth languages depending on what your school offers, they can be anything from Ancient Greek to Japanese.

as a subject, you can drop it by 10th grade which pretty much everyone that doesnt plan on becoming a doctor does (finals are in 12th grade)

Pretty much every school offers either French, German or Spanish, but it's not uncommon for some to have Latin or Chinese teachers too

In the final exam I had to have one or two languages but it could be just German.

A second language is mandatory, but most schools will only teach you English and German as a "first language".
Then you have to pick a second foreign language to learn, can be anything but most highschools are only suited to teach you English, German, Spanish and sometimes Italian. Most kids that pick italian or chinese as a second language will be sent classes by mail
