Finland is the land of ambient folk and melancholic rock music for me. They have a lot of metal bands per capita, but that statistic counts every shitty student garage band and iirc their government makes instruments available for free for students or something like that

No I don't think anyone gets free instruments for themselves. My high school had a pretty great music class room and the teachers were supportive of any student bands who wanted to play, and they even gave us credits for doing so.

Yeah well rock and metal were more popular in the 2000's when bands like Nightwish and CoB were in their prime. That kind of music is still popular, no doubt about it, but rap and electronic pop dominate the lists nowadays. If I had to find a positive side about this, I'd say that at least the most popular rap and pop songs are in Finnish and by Finnish "artists".
