Actually, anyone that pays taxes contributes to the common good whether they want to or not. Mostly it's because people don't wanna go to jail for not doing so. That money is used for a lot of things that I'm not going to get into because I'm pretty sure you already know. People that work are contributing to the economy, people that spend are also contributing to the economy, etc etc.
Unless you're a social hermit living in the wilderness, you are contributing to the greater good whether you realize it or not.
Fair enough if you wanna spend your time preparing for a war that may never happen, it's your life. I'm sure you get paid well enough. Finnish conscription isn't a career. It only lasts for about half a year to a full year for most. You're not really paid in any meaningful way to go through with it, you get some minuscule compensation which is most often just enough to get you a cup of coffee with a bun on the side every now and then. Again, here at least it's a defence force, not an offensive one. Because the training is short, it only focuses on teaching everyone the basics on how to stand their ground in case it's ever needed. I stand by my argument of individuality as a philosophy being counterproductive to the species as a whole, like you said, you with your individualist mindset are forced to contribute to society in the shape of taxes etc., with your mindset you wouldn't do it if you didn't have to, so given the opprtunity you'd rather degenerate your surroundings. The conscription here also teaches you the importance of your fellow countrymen, not as citizen of the same nation, but as people who share your burdens and achievements and who rely on you like you rely on them. I can totally aggree with you on your few last lines though, living your life in one country only and thinking it's the best one ever and muh culture etc. all that jazz is just idiotic and indeed, tragic. First of all, I don't think individualism is possible in today's day and age. You can adopt aspects of it, but can never be one. I have merely told you the way of thinking of A LOT of people. Secondly, I pay taxes and I make sure 15% of my monthly paycheck goes to RELIABLE charities. I am also in the process of opening a manufacturing plant for rainwater harvesting systems and have plans to expand that to other countries/regions. I know this sounds very arrogant but this isn't supposed to be some self praise for which I want pats on the back. I do this not because I'm forced to but because I WANT to. I don't see anyone as my countrymen nor do I have any interest of giving out preferential treatment based on something as arbitrary as common citizenship/nationality, only humans that need help.

Totally feel you. I guess there's some environmental bias in play here as well, harsh climates force you to rely on your community more so than you'd probably have to in a more pleasing environment.
