Students/intellectuals don't really represent political bodies which actually control the direction the country takes.
Iran has lots of intellectuals for example but they're governed by a shitty authoritarian islamic fundamental regime which actively kills creativity and free thought.

The caste system is well prevelant in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, throughout the subcontinent. What they don’t have is a varna system.
For example, there are self proclaimed “Muslim Chauhans” “Muslim Rajputs” both in India and Pakistan who don’t marry outside their caste. This comes from lots of Rajputs and the Mughal dynasties intermarrying with each other for diplomacy. Akbar married off his sisters and cousins to Rajput kings and Rajputs married off their princesses to Akbar to establish diplomacy.
So, four hundred years later, “Muslim” Rajputs would rather marry off their daughters to “Hindu” Rajputs instead of other Muslims.
