Russian Literature

So I've given up on Russian fantasy and have decided to try Russian literature instead. Is War and Peace a good place to start?

No. Crime and punishment is the obligatory start

>flag
too long and complicated for you honestly

It is. Still in book 2 but it's honestly really catchy.

Jesus Christ, it's most boring shit in the world, manual for freezer is more interesting than that shit.

Read Gogol

>Russian fantasy
Do you mean pulp fiction with shitty CGI covers or something else? And what are yiur prefrences in general?

I would start with shorter books, just to get the feel of it.
I'd recommend A hero of our time, Novels from Petersburg, any Chekhov short story or play, the death of Ivan Illich.
Anything from Chekhov and Gogol is really good

>1585 pages
That’s the handheld softcover size. Errrmmm how about you read something pragmatic?

Don't be like that, Ivan. Us Americans aren't as dumb as everyone thinks we are. People mistake our ignorance for stupidity.
>Still in book 2
Is this a series of books?
But it's about the French invasion of Russia. How can that be borning?
No, I mean high fantasy; swords, magic, elves, you know the rest.
What books has he written?
Thanks.

I loved War and Peace tbqh

this is probably a good recommendation though

What's the that about?
I have a really fast reading speed so it won't be a problem.

also the pic u posted is my fav english translation of it

Gogol's works are steeped in folklore and dark romanticism. Hints of Poe.

Man, did you read that huh? No? Then just trust me, this shit was written to torture russian speak schoolboys, to show them how Hell looks like.

Read Sholokhov.

No. I love Russian literature but this is the one book I couldn't finish. I watched a mini series based on it and even that was boring.

Lmao, brainlet hohol.
>high fantasy
Can you give some examples? All russian "high" fantasy is kinda trash as far as i know.

The Toвapищ Гитлep serie

>fast reading
So why don't you just tead the resume?

I'm going to read Tolstoi soon

There are multiple English translations? How come?
Thanks again. Are you the Swiss guy that likes Tolkien too?
Who's that?
How is it borning? It's about the French invasion of Russia.
>Can you give some examples?
Lord of the Rings, Age of Sigmar, the older Elder Scrolls games.
I'm not speed-reading. I'm saying my natural reading speed is quick.

>I've given up on Russian fantasy
What have you read?

No. I read the first few pages and instantly closed the book and threw it out. It was so fucking awful.

If you want to get acquainted with Russian literature, then I advise you to read Gogol. First of all, "Old Woman Izergil" and "Portrait".

By the way, "Izergil" is from Maxim Gorky.

Yes, pretty sure I'm the only Swiss who posts in book threads

>Us Americans aren't as dumb
>Us Americans
For fucksake.

It's not that I have read Russian fantasy books, it's just I can't find them. All the books that I have seen are basically alt-history (IE: what if the Tsar wasn't killed) Thanks.
What?
Based.

I doubt most Americans are versed in Russian literature other than The Gulag Archipelago and that was mostly because its message is commies=bad.

Maybe also read "Monday beggins in Saturday"

Russian "classic" literature boring af and shit.

Who thinks the same?

No, read The Master and Margarita first

I liked crime and punishment.

the brainlet hohol

That book sucks. Honestly I don't understand the hype over that stupid book at all.

Go read Chekhov's "Ward No.6" and "Ariadne", the incel anthem.

Dostoevsky is entertainming but pretty overrated imo, all his characters and plots are retarded. Like honestly Turgenev is a better writer in terms of style.

Nothing wrong with Tolstoy though.

Americans, gopniks and retards on Jow Forums

Fantasy is trashy romance novels for soymen. To this day I've never found a fantasy novel that wasnt complete trash, with the partial exception of Terry Pratchett

I've read only Master and Margarita and Crime and Punishment, because they were school lectures, but I enjoyed them. It's definitely not the archaic, overly verbose type of stuff you could expect from classic literature.

>That book sucks. Honestly I don't understand the hype over that stupid book at all.

Honestly I don't understand the hype over ALL OF RUSSIAN LITERATURE.

>Dostoevsky
hard to read boring and depressed shit

>Leo Tolstoy
long to read boring and sissy naive romantic shit

>Bulgakov
naive ""mysterious"" and predictable af shit

>Gogol
redneck-style ukrainian-russian nonsense understandable only to the locals

>Strugatsky Brothers
ugly sci-fi and fantasy racemixes like stalker-shit with "unknown radiation area" and "executor of desires".

Why do foreigners appreciate Russian literature?

maybe you have a shit taste

>muh elves and dwarves
>muh swordfighting and magic
>muh heroes and villains

gay

>have a fucking galaxy masters like Lem and Sapkowski
>read a shitty russian authors and pulp fiction tier novels

This is what I call Polish autism.

If that's all you see in a book, you are a brainlet
