Well it has to work if they want it to be of any real use, you cant just go undoing your mistakes just because its a ton of money, thats just unfair and it takes away credibility from the system.
I think its the programming paradigm, solidity is basically a C like language and C is for synchronous tasks not for parallel processing.
IIRC what they did was check if the transaction had completed but didnt take into account that in that small time window a ton of other transactions could happen
