Most authoritarian regimes are often subject to coups and revolutions, because they are unable to adapt to change, or to resolve the inevitable socio-political conflicts.
They are also extremely unstable during the transitioning of power.

The reason why there are still so many authoritarian regimes is poverty.
Poor populations tend to be much less poltitically active, and even when they are, they don't get enough material support for a successful revolution. This is why when coups happen there, they usually are done by military, or by feuding elites in control of the military.
Keeping a big middle class population in check would require a strong focus internal security, and you would also need to ensure the loyalty of your elites, the loyalty of the army, and the loyalty of big businesses, which are almost inevitable when you have a sizeable middle class. All of this requires resourses which could be spent elsewhere. So instability in modern authoritarianism is inevitable.
