The mainnet for link has not released yet. It's speculated that mainnet is 2+ months away. It's much harder to "stake" link than other coins. Link will be used as collateral for nodes, so you'll have to run a functioning node and actually process requests for data. Apparently it's not that hard if you're technically minded, but the full extent of difficulty and profitability for running a node has yet to be seen. Profitability especially, with only 10k link. The github and linktrader subreddit has some good guides on setting up nodes. There is also the option of staking pools, where you put up the link in a smart contract so a third party can use yours and others link. I think the only public pool at the moment is linkpool. But I assume there will be others founded after mainnet. They take a cut of the profits, but its pretty much just deposit your link and receive profits.

We're all betting on smart contracts being the future. If that is the case, they need some way to grab off chain data in such a way that doesn't render the advantages of blockchain moot. As far as I can tell link is leading the pack of possible solutions. Is it a sure thing? No. But someone has to do it, and from what I've seen of other projects, they seem too narrow in focus. Chainlink is aiming to be a generalist solution that allows any sort of offchain data to be used in any smart contract. I think it's worth betting on, but I don't fall into the 1000 EOY camp. But maybe I'm also retarded, so take my word with a grain of salt.

The Fud around this coin is so intense, it kind of warps perceptions. Fudders fud, holders fud, shillers fud with their pajeet tier shills. The memes are great and all, but it gets kind of hard to judge this with a clear head. If you're not actually sure about link, go listen to some of Sergey's talks from last year. A lot of them are on youtube.

Well once mainnet is launched companies can legit use CL to do what it’s designed for, taking real world data and plugging it into their smart contracts. Of course this is all on the basis that smart contracts will become mainstream and will need CL in order to be executed. The latter is certain while the former is, IMO, very likely but not a 100% stone cold lock to happen. The timeframe is also a mystery but there’s been lots of research done over the past 9-10 months here on why smart contracts will become mainstream and who will be the main users. I recommend searching archives for old Link threads for that particular info.

As of right now the team is just working their asses of towards mainnet release. test net is available but there hasn’t been much testing on it. There’s been speculation and reasoning for that as well.

Great explanation. I guess I just kind of sit on the fence with this whole thing. I see block chain for what it is. A database that's read/write only, no deleting allowed, cryptographically secure, distributed, trust less, the works. I see the power of smart contracts and the need for an Oracle is painfully obvious. I've made a bit of money trading (couple hundred grand). It just seems surreal. Like this could really be it. We might all actually be on to something here. But the fud is immense. Entrenched interests fucking hate this shit with a white hot passion. Even normie tech geeks on sites like hacker news, ars, etc. utterly despise block chain and constantly slam it. Even I don't think it's gonna change the world but it's gonna be big. Imo just sell a small chunk after every pump. That way if it retraces you can buy more and accumulate or at the very least you secure profits. I don't mean sell on small pumps, but like if it goes from 0.20 to $1 I would sell a little bit. Then when it goes down to 0.70 you buy back in and so forth
