I'm learning chinese since they're taking over my country and it's so fucking hard
You should talk to people to check your pronunciation. You should also learn IPA since it's actually an incredibly useful time investment even if you're only ever going to learn one language (one day of effort for a better understanding of how sounds work forever and a quick tool to reference them independent of orthography.)

Learn pronunciation FIRST since it's so different from western languages, then blast yourself with input on input using Spoonfed Chinese or whatever Anki deck you want to use. Try to expose yourself to the characters only passively and really focus on nailing the sounds. I recommend Zhuyin over Pinyin for this reason, since Pinyin doesn't correspond to western uses of letters at all. Casually spoken Mandarin isn't hard once you have that down: in fact, it's the easiest spoken language I've ever studied **past the pronunciation stage** and **before the literary stage.** The written and literary language is the hardest subject I've ever studied by far but you really don't need to get a grip of that until you've gotten a grip of the casual spoken language, which you can do in about a year of well-applied effort.
