Yes it started out that way. Old English is Germanic, but not English today.

That is wrong, most words in daily used English are of Germanic origin. Same goes for the entire grammar.
Sure, the english dictionary has a lot of french, greek and latin loan words, but in dialy spoken language they don't matter that much.
