Algerians really hated French colonial rule. It was a quasi-apartheid system and European settlers were like 10% of the total population. There is no way it would have worked unless the French completely got rid of the natives, which would have definitely have escalated things to some extent in the climate of the Cold War. If you are a big, important nation like France you can't just ethnically cleanse someone without creating a huge international crisis. South Africa was nowhere near as relevant as France and they got a lot of international backlash when things started heading towards civil war in the late 80s.
