you have pravaši who were croatian nationalists that wanted nothing to do with any germans, hungarians or serbs
then you have mađaroni that were basically magyar and german lapdogs that wanted to bend over for protection
and you have narodnjaci who were anti germanization and magyarization and were still up for a compromise, they also wanted to unify all croatian land ( croatia proper, bosnian croatia, dalmatia and istria). later on they joined the croato-serbian coalition

I'm not saying the Habsburg monarchy was particularly chauvinist, I'm under the impression it was comparatively tolerant for its time. Nonetheless Germanization and Magyarization happened, whether or not that was forced is another question and probably differs from occassion

Not really, since people did things differently back then. Russians did the same in Asia etc. Cultural assimilation happened everywhere, so I can hardly blame them considering the time period. Today northern Serbia is way more developed than southern Serbia in both infrastructure, housing etc and being "treated more fairly" in Turkish empire didn't really pay off to the descendants in those regions. Also, I don't really hold bad sentiment for historical events. From what I've heard from my grandparents, their parents' lives were all right in A-H. The birth of nationalism in 19th century made a country like A-H impossible to exist without some kind of reformation and one of its core problems were that it was too multi-ethnic for the time period. The idea of nation states spread like wildfire in this region and elsewhere in Europe so the collapse of large multi-ethnic empires was inevitable.
Even Yugoslavia was fucked from the start since it didn't have strong transnational indoctrination policies akin to what USA had and instead just cracked down on nationalism which gave birth to extremist factions that later culminated into a real shitfest we had during ww2 and the 90s.
