This is what happens when your shithole's government is so incompetent that it only cares about which monuments are the most popular.
Pic related is the Sakakany Palace, built in the late 1800s by an italian architect. It's so unheard of because the government would never want to remove all the slums around it. Hell, it doesn't even have an english wikipedia page. See those cars? Trash piles between them as stray cats feed on them.
imo there's no need to remove the surrounding buildings. just re-plaster/paint the facades and clean up/re-pave the streets and the entire place will look good.
Andrew Ortiz
It just looks so subhuman-like. All these buildings are just left to rot.
And, about a year ago they announced they will be making a new capital which is like putting the nail on the coffin meaning that Cairo will never get de-slummed or revamped
I like Egypt and its culture. What would you recommend to visit except most obvious tourist places?
Evan Torres
>What would you recommend to visit Honestly, just don't. It's a shithole and you're better off going to Rome or Prague.
Jose Rogers
is it really that bad? don't you have any hidden gems worth to visit?
Christian Phillips
>is it really that bad? The positives of visiting egypt are far too small compared to the negatives. Like, a lot of the stuff there are just old and rotting.
If you're white and you visit some of the less affluent areas, you will have people looking at you awkwardly and restaurants charging you exorbitant prices. You might even get robbed if you're not careful.
Blake Scott
based
buildings are for the people, not for tourists
Andrew Walker
what about southern Egypt. Anything worth to visit there? It seems mysterious to me.
Thomas Hall
>you will have people looking at you awkwardly Awkwardly how? Also what would they think of blacks, are there any there?
Lincoln Fisher
Southern Egypt is actually a lot worse than Northern Egypt in terms of wealth.
Except for the few ancient temples, there's nothing else to see I think. But, I am not very familiar with Southern Egypt because I am not from there. There used to be a southern Egyptian on Jow Forums but he stopped posting sometime ago.
Charles Rivera
>Awkwardly how? Like staring and stuff you know >Also what would they think of blacks I don't know but it probably wouldn't be as bad as when they see a white guy or something, but still bad I think. >are there any there? Yes. There are people from SSA who work in Egypt, but they aren't that much.
Ayden Brown
how is Alexandria? Is it safe? Is is a nice city to live? Not that I would like to, but I'm just curious.
Henry Edwards
>how is Alexandria? It's probably better than the avg district in Cairo, but like all cities in the 3rd world it's unequal in terms of wealth and it has slums. >Is it safe? I guess. >Is is a nice city to live? Perhaps, but maaaan some of the stations of the alex tramway are so disgusting.
Sebastian Martinez
how are different parts of Egypt? I mean in terms of development, culture etc. Are there any minorities except for Copts? Do you have any enclaves with people of different customs etc?
Carter Foster
Same here. This is a fort built in my village around 1405. Apparently the local government cares so little about it that people from nearby slum have started living there.
1- Sinai - mostly arab bedouin, but has Saint Catherine's Monastery 2- Northern Egypt/Delta region(with the exception of Cairo) - overwhelmingly muslim with the exception of Alexandria. Basically rural. 3- Middle Egypt(Nile valley; from beni suef to Assiut or so) - the bible/quran belt, has the biggest number of christians with governorates like Assiut being 50/50 in terms of religion. Unfortunately, an ultra-religious shithole* 4- South Egypt(Nile valley from assiut or so to Aswan + Fayum) - Richer than middle egypt but still poorer than the delta region. This is where you can find most Nubians 5- Siwa - Traditionally, it's a berber region where some of the natives still speak siwan berber 6- Cairo-Giza-Helwan conglomerate - the most affluent region in Egypt; has the biggest number of christians by population 7- The Red Sea coast - barely populated. This is where you can find Beja people I think
The western desert is inhospitable thanks to ~20 million german/italian/british mines so no one lives there.
*This place is so religious that there was this muslim guy who made drawings of egyptian footballers in Coptic Christian art, and they sued him 4 times for desecrating sacred paintings and so. There was this one time when a christian guy had sex with a muslim woman and the muslims there honor-killed her.
Oliver Adams
Sucks desu. That billboard looks so old. Can you post more examples?
Nolan Murphy
thank you for a deep explanation. I really like ancient Egypt culture and the role of your country that played in the past. Good luck!
Damn. To be honest, at least these monuments are rotting. If it was Iraq or Syria, they would've gotten bombed lmao.
Only in central Cairo(the affluent and old part of Cairo).
Isaac Collins
>It's so unheard of because the government would never want to remove all the slums around it.
It doesn't look like slums, it looks like blocks intended to house the poorer part of population but they're not self-made, that's for sure.
Here it's impossible to remove commieblocks because all the flats belong to their dwellers as their property so if you wanted to demolish a block, you'd have to buy the flats from every single owner whose number may amount to 100 or more in one block. Maybe it's the same in Egypt?
Easton Perez
>Maybe it's the same in Egypt? Only in very few places, and in the government-owned housing for slum residents(they demolish slums then move them to other far away places to ease stress on cities).
Some people here get rich then immediately build tons upon tons of tall, unstable, soul-less buildings. Within 5 years, these properties become slums...
Elijah Ramirez
>This place is so religious that there was this muslim guy who made drawings of egyptian footballers in Coptic Christian art, and they sued him 4 times for desecrating sacred paintings and so.
>On 10 Oct. a regional court in Warsaw sentenced Jerzy Urban, the owner and editor-in-chief of the anticlerical weekly “No”, to pay a huge fine of 120 thousand zlotys plus 28 thousand of court costs (together approx. 40 thousand US dollars) for publishing (in 2012) “a caricatural image of Jesus with unintelligent (low IQ) facial expression”. This is the largest fine ever levied in post-communist Poland for blasphemy - under art. 196 of the Penal code on offending religious feelings. The article provides that “anyone who offends the religious feelings of others by publicly blaspheming n object of religious worship or a place dedicated to the public celebration of religious rites is liable to a fine, the restriction of liberty or imprisonment for up to two years.
Carter Davis
That unironically looks offensive. However, pic related is what the guy I was talking about drew.
>Some people here get rich then immediately build tons upon tons of tall, unstable, soul-less buildings. Within 5 years, these properties become slums...
so it's someone's private propety, how could the government simply remove it? it would have to pay compensation to the owner, probably very high given how many people live (and pay rent) there
>However, pic related is what the guy I was talking about drew.
Painting it on a piece of religious art is offensive as well
I can't even imagine what muslims would do if someone drew the Salah's face on the Quran
Luis Walker
In Poland you'd get a very high fine or prison sentence for this for sure.
Cameron Ramirez
>butthurt about architecture >reddit spacing Obvious Hungarian cuck on proxy, the obese codemonkey who dreams of becoming an architect one day. archive.4plebs.org/pol/thread/189252633/
Adam Sanchez
>I can't even imagine what muslims would do if someone drew the Salah's face on the Quran You don't need to imagine. Refer to charlie hebdo attacks.
That isn't me at all. My case here isn't against modern architecture - I am against the egypsie government leaving the architecture from the 1500s-1930s rot.
Jack Evans
Is there something the egyptian government isn't leaving to rot?
Are Egyptians generally content with the aftermath of the Arab Spring? Is life better now that it was before the revolution? What do Egyptians think about Gaddafi?
John Rivera
>Are Egyptians generally content with the aftermath of the Arab Spring? no. It was bad before, not it's worse because the economy got fucked during the whole thing. Egypt's GDP decreased by ~30% or 20% after 2011. >Is life better now that it was before the revolution? No. >What do Egyptians think about Gaddafi? Most see him as a lunatic tyrant because there are rumors that instead of playing islamic verses every morning on their national tv, they would read a page of his Green book lmao.
Josiah Davis
Another rumor is that when they killed him and started looking through his home, they found an underground library full of "Magic" and "Occult" books, so people started thinking that he was mentally deranged.
Dominic Hall
>Most see him as a lunatic tyrant because there are rumors that instead of playing islamic verses every morning on their national tv, they would read a page of his Green book lmao.
is it really such a big price for economic prosperity and financial well-being of Libyan citizens he provided?
Caleb Brown
Honestly, if rulers bring stability and economic prosperity people shouldn't give a shit what their ideologies are.
Adam Brooks
so you'd bring Mubarak back?
Grayson Nguyen
Mubarak only brought stability during his last 15 years. He was only alright during his first years desu.
Jordan Hall
That's because that building fucking sucks, OP. The Italian architect came a century or two too late. It has no artistic value whatsoever. Maybe it is of local historical value, but people certainly aren't going to visit a shithole like Egypt for some ornamented villa.
repairing forts is expensive, only West-European countries can afford it
