That's the dumbest part of all this. It's supposedly being done to protect kids, but if you buy a wanking licence ("porn pass"), it's a one-time activation, so if a kid has a parent who buys a pass and uses it to watch porn on the family computer or some other device that the kid has access to, the kid will still be able to visit porn sites just as easily as they could before the ban.

And of course, kids could just get an older friend to buy a wanking licence for them. Selling cigarettes to under 18s is illegal, but when I was at school plenty of the kids there smoked. This won't protect kids at all, and isn't intended to. It's just another thinly veiled assault on freedom and privacy, bundled together with a tax.

Unlike with the ban on torrent sites, this isn't being done at the ISP level, but rather will be implemented by the websites themselves. Websites not complying with age checks will be fined up to £250,000, or 5% of their income.

This company is currently competing for the government contract to provide the age-checking tool that will have to be used by all porn sites in accordance with this law. There really aren't. There are some among the Liberal Democrats who were originally members of the Liberal Party who do care about civil liberties, but they are in the minority.
