Because software scales like crazy.
You want double the tacos? You hire twice the Mexicans.
You want to serve double the traffic? You just change some configurations.
Software businesses need less manpower to serve and profit off far more customers. That predicates on doing good engineering, so it's very much worthwhile to pay lots for good engineers.

>engineering
Speaking of which, I keep seeing Americans using the word "engineer" in the context of codemonkey environments (e.g. g*ogle, m*crosoft, etc.), even though I imagine they aren't actually members of their professional engineering order (unlike, for example, civil engineers who often need to). Is it just a case of codemonkeys LARPing and misusing the word, or are the rules in th US completely different as regards engineering?
There are some places that refer to janitors as custodial engineers. The word engineer doesn't hold much esteem by itself here
I'm not asking about esteem, I'm asking about the law
>custodial engineers
wew, I guess that answers my question
Garbage men are called sanitation engineers in my city cause they thought garbage man sounded demeaning
It's a meme word here. Gotta google nut engineers to find a hooker
Engineer label is not protected here. Theres no need since software failure (in general) is hardly ever dangerous.
Its not larping though. If doing software was just coding, Id agree with you. Its the other things that take up most of my time.
