Because the 精日 in /djt/ don't like us.

Let's all learn some variety of Chinese together! Or just get better at 漢字/汉子.

Innovative. How do you start? Just memorize the alphabet?

China doesn't produce quality media like japan, why should we learn chinese?

They are great at producing cracks and hacks to pirate japanese media. You need to know chinese to find your way through chinese pirate forums

Because Japanese have an effective anti-piracy system in place. So if you want to read latest manga or get access to doujins and such, your only real option (apart from living in Japan or somewhere close) is to go through the Chinese scans/downloads.
And Chinese generally don't bother putting the untranslated stuff up.

Plus, all Japanese learn Chinese in school because all of their pre-Meiji stuff is written in Chinese. So there's also that if you happen to be interested in shit like reading primary sources from history or untranslated works of many artists, philosophers and all that jazz.

Or just use it to learn Japanese as well:
youtube.com/channel/UCDhjThxt99rkGcjcEreyOQg/videos
Two Chino-Japanese girls talking about basic Chinese completely in Japanese.
Makes for good practice and it's better than hearing them talk about (stuff you already know) English or something.

Does Chinese have honorific speech? What about girly speech?

I mean you can be polite by using 您 I suppose.

Japanese honorifics come from Chinese. I think they mostly abolished it nowadays, though. Spirit of Communism and all.

One simple example is ni hao and ninhao, where the latter is basically the same but more proper and aimed at people of higher rank.
Of course, grain of salt adviced, I don't even study Mandarin, it's just random knowledge which I seaarched up on while learning Jap.

Where can I trade in my Japanese-learning books for Chinese-learning books?

Attached: photo_038.jpg (1200x900, 134K)

Any thoughts on using Anki lads? Also has anyone developed a hanzi battle?

They do have a first-person pronoun that's only used by the Emperor, 朕. I know that from watching enough period dramas.

You go to Dekinai-chan and do 100% on her kanji test with simplified characters. No other way.

您 is still used in Taiwan to some extent. Actually, something I found interesting, if you look at the recent referenda dealing with gay marriage and other things, several of the referendum questions were written using 您 and several of the referendum questions were written using 你. Pretty odd.

This general won't pickup without a guide uploaded to neocities and linked in the op

>This general won't pickup without a guide uploaded to neocities and linked in the op
I really have no idea how to develop one lmao. I'm honestly only getting back into Chinese after several years not practicing. (tfw /asiangf2019/ seems to be working out so I'm motivated again)

there have been daily china threads before and they had a guide to learning chinese, but they're so few and far between it would take ages to find one in the archives

That's all the translation/interpretation I remember off the top of my head. Been many years.

Dammit, forgot that last line

Cantonese speakers learn Mandarin too right? So to get two birds with one stone you should just learn Mandarin unless you want to be particularly intimate/friendly with Cantonese diaspora?

People on the mainland who grow up in Canto households absolutely learn Mandarin. In HK, I'm not as sure, but probably.

Canto-speakers born in North America, generally not. Especially not in San Francisco.

If you wanted to learn a Chinese language, I'd pick up Mandarin above all others. The quality of education available in Cantonese (if you can even find it in the US; I certainly couldn't in the mid-2000s) would be spotty at best.

>Any interest in Classical Chinese?

It's brutally interesting that you can open up Sun Tzu's Art of War original and actually read the fucking thing knowing nothing but some basic kanji.
ctext.org/art-of-war/laying-plans?en=off

It's an interesting topic, but a language in on its own. Japanese have to learn it separately and so do the Chinese. Great topic, but one that should come after learning either of those languages first. I wouldn't trust English sources alone to properly teach that one.

basically this
i know one person who did a gcse or a-level in Cantonese and she said that her school was one of the only places that did it in the UK
It's probably only in rural guangdong, hong kong, and overseas where you find people who can speak Cantonese and not speak mandarin
I did a day trip to Guangzhou when I was living in Shenzhen and even though I heard far more Cantonese spoken in restaurants and shops than I did in Shenzhen, if I went somewhere and spoke Mandarin I don't think anyone cared, they were probably just happy that we could understand them

the point where rest being known object of persuit being determined
that being determined calmness can be obtained
calmness being will succeed to tranquility
tranquility succeed to careful deliberation
after afterful deliberation is achieve desired end can be obtained
things have roots and branches, afraids have their beginning and end, know what is first and what is last will lead near to what is taught in the Great Learning

these are the other parts of the great learning, the prose is incomplete without them

My dad grew up in HK and speaks mandarin worse than me. It depends on the gwneration.

>afraids
affairs

>I wouldn't trust English sources alone to properly teach that one.
Yeah, the English translations out there are just bad. Like Legge's translation of 大學 is just trash. If you DO know Mandarin though, holy crap the quality of discussion on Baidu Baike is amazing.

For me though, it's Chinese poetry.

I'll never forget that one.

The people are either pussies who think someone will catch them or high on morals/exclusivity.
Fact of the matter is, staying on top of the fan translation community involves speaking Chinese or Korean, because they always get the stuff on the internet first.

Japan produces nice cartoons. China has a rich and interesting history. The fuck does Korea have? Kpop? If you enjoy it that much then go right ahead but most don't.

You shouldn't underestimate the massive popularity of Kpop. That shit unfortunately outshines the real treasures but plebs are plebs.

I know kpop is popular but I would bet most people in the US, or the west, are more likely to study Chinese or Japanese. But I could be wrong.

Korea has:
1. Better beef dishes
2. Based Juche
3. More real-life yanderes per capita than anywhere else in the region

Are you talking about Worst or Best Korea?

There is only one Korea really.

But honestly good luck finding beef dishes anywhere that there's Juche. (the bit about real-life yanderes is true though regardless of which Korea it is)

Taiwan Ministry of Education dictionary:
dict.revised dot moe dot edu dot tw/cbdic/
(don't know why this triggers a spam filter but it's a legit government website)

Perhaps the single best free dictionary I've got. I've actually been wanting to source a print edition for over a decade (because I like to have the physical copies). The search supports ^ and $ (start of string and end of string) plus . and * wildcards, so searching for compounds containing a common character is trivial.

LOTS of 成語 with very good explanations.

Main downside is the pronunciation key that comes up in the search is fucking zhuyin fuhao (bopomofo if you're a retard) rather than pinyin. When you click on the specific entry it does show the pinyin though. Oh, and it's not Chinese-English, but whatever.

Fuck off, it's beautiful.

Haha I remember having to learn that distinction in class.

How about 要 vs 會/会?

That's because Taiwanese uses bopomofo and traditional, throw that fucking app out
