He set those ascetic looks and features as goals himself. His God had told him to make the OS that way. To make it any more aesthetically pleasing would have been against his beliefs. Graphics are the least difficult thing to implement in an OS anyway, anyone can doodle fancy looking keys and buttons, it's what under the hood that requires intelligence.
