Even putting aside General American, it is wrong to assume that there aren't accents we think of as "stereotypically American" to represent the non-city, non-South, non-California regions. I have heard Canadian accents, they really do not sound that different to American accents. I have even been to both Anglo Canada and Quebec, and your average Canadian only has minor sound differences compared to the American accent. Not all that different from where I live unless they try to pronounce something like "about."
