There were only two ways this was going to ended: an invasion of the mainland, which would have cause an estimated fifteen million more deaths, or nuclear bombing, which only killed around two hundred thousand. The first option also includes the execution of the Japanese emperor, which would have destabilized the entire country.
It's basic history. Okinawa had been captured and all that was left was the mainland. The Japanese government wouldn't surrende and the Japanese people were prepared to fight to the bitter end. The estimated caulities of a mainland invasion was around fifteen million, so Truman took the other option: nuking Japanese cities.

Quite a few countries were independently researching nuclear weapons. Germans had 7 independent operations and could have created the first atomic bomb with some luck. Soviets would make their own only a few years later.
