The statue in the middle is of Queen Victoria, and the base upon which she sits is actually two sets of staircases leading to underground toilets. Yes, the city's heart is literally a set of shitty toilets frequented by drug-peddling reprobates and their junkie ilk. It speaks volumes for the place.

There aren't many ethnics here yet, which means murders and rapes and whatnot aren't too common. Most people are dirt poor and unemployed, though, so petty theft, common assault/street fights, and drug use are rampant

some neighborhoods like near-east austin are very hipster. food trucks, breweries, and live music are very popular here. before the hipster boom, it was more of a misfit cowboy stoner kind of town, and now it's becoming more of a techie yuppie city.
