Paradoxically the maggots are keeping him alive. When you have too many dead cells anywhere in your body, the material starts to decay. That can lead to blood poisoining or sepsis which is extremly dangerous (to a ppint doctors prefer to cut infected fingers, arms or even whole legs off to save the patients). The maggots are interesting in a way that it eats only dead material, keeping the wound "sterile". In some countries they use maggots in some body part transplants (leg, fingers) to keep the sewed part "clean" so it has time to heal and connect all the tissue.
Though i have no idea how will doctors fix this. Skin transplant?
