. The beauty of the single payer system is that additional private insurances must offer much better service in order to stay in business. The government mandated healthcare sets the baseline standard of healthcare which may have rough edges but keeps people alive and reasonably healthy.

You have to purchase a mandatory private insurance by law and might qualify for some subsidies which can't reject you any more because of your pre-existing conditions but for most formerly uninsured people this results in some form of minimal and still expensive disaster insurance.

Personally I currently have private insurance on top of the state mandated one. My insurance is top notch and costs me a little over 180 zł (about 60 bucks) per month. It covers almost everything aside from most expensive treatments such as cancer treatment. Like I said, the private insurer must offer service significantly better than what the state offers.

If I ever fall on hard times, I will resort to use the state healthcare. Shitty as it is, it keeps people alive and prevents them from falling into a debt trap once they need a prolonged treatment.

My friend fell ill with cancer when she was in her mid 20s. She was given state funded treatment that cured her, even though she sometimes had to wait long queues and at one time even had her chemo at hospital corridor due to lack of beds. But she would be dead now if not the state-funded healthcare because she would never be able to afford her treatment and had nowhere near the income prior to her cancer that would cover a private insurance.
