The airport

Anywhere desu. You can find a decent number of them in pretty much every corner of Mexico except for the Yucatan peninsula.

>except for the Yucatan peninsula
isn't that prime real estate? Why haven't the Europeans taken it over?

Mayas still own most of the land there. They won a small war over Euro Mexicans trying to take all the good real estate and farm land and enslave them about 130 years ago. The Criollo population never tried to dominate the locals in the Yucatan peninsula again after that. Also it's prohibitively difficult for foreigners to own beach property in Mexico, most just do long term lease agreements. The Mexican government has laws set up so foreigners can't actually own land within 50km away from any coastline, at best foreigners can set up a Mexican registered trust/corporation that will hold the title under a long term lease but the Mexican government can actually seize it if they think the foreigner is taking advantage of the situation and return it to Mexican control. This was done specifically so foreigners couldn't buy coastal property and profit off of off shore oil deposits or buy up all the good beach property and hoard the profits from it outside of the country. It's actually one of the few competent things the Mexican government has done that's effectively kept wealth inside of Mexico.

I know a Mexican dude who used to work for BMW in the US who went back to the Yucatan and built a house a lot like pic related on the beach. The whole fucking thing only cost him $90,000 to build. He's building a second smaller one for $50,000 right now and wants to rent it to American tourists for $1,000 per week.
