It's easy as fuck, but like 1 in every 30 people I serve are homeless and these aren't just people down on their luck, those people are fine, these are mentally ill people who are physically unable or actively refuse help, so they've been homeless for years now
The other day I had some homeless Asian lady told me in half thickly accented english and half Chinese her plan for America to win the trade war
But because Its overnight and no one else is in the store I can't escape conversations like these and had to listen to her ramble for 20 minutes until someone else walked in and I pretended to help them.

Yeah, I'm sure that's really annoying. I run into those types all the time at the library. Year or two ago one guy at a computer station stood up and started screaming that bombs were going to go off in NYC and LA. Kind of spooky what some peoples minds can convince themselves of.
Anyway, as long as you're getting paid decently it could be worse I guess.

But I doubt there's anything we can do about it, since you can't force people to get help.
I'd imagine a library is much, Much worse than what I deal with, since people go to libraries to just sit and have no real obligation to leave unlike in a retail store.

I hate having to browse pol whenever something major happened that I can’t escape from. I think I’m gonna be stuck in this state forever.

One of my favorite homeless regulars is some older black woman named Shauna and despite all of my normal conversations with her, one day a few weeks ago she came out and started speaking about how you can't trust "them" without saying who they are, and went on about you can't trust anyone, (except me ofc, I'm one of the good few who aren't under their influence)
And that hit me on why she's still homeless even after an entire year of me seeing her daily. You can't tell what people have going on in their minds.

Its pretty sad. I don't think there's a lot that can be done for some if it's not caught early on. Additionally, their primary interaction with authority is probably the police, which for obvious reasons probably doesn't help much in gaining their trust. Not saying that all cops are bad, but one bad interaction with one will leave a bad taste in the mouth.

I stopped taking them as they didn't seem to have the desired positive effect on me anymore, but luckily they do now

Yeah, the police are mostly called to shoo them away since their presence actively stops customers from shopping in stores.
If the police are only dispatched to get them to fuck off of course they'd distrust them, with this compounded with whatever they have going on with their mind is a pretty bad combination.
I kinda wish there was something to do to help them, but it giving them money only lets them avoid seeking real professional help.

I wish I could tell everyone that's giving them money to stop, but Its impossible.
Theres one late 50s white dude who stands in front of my store and begs on his hands and knees for people to buy him "just a bag of chips and a drink", but he goes to pick up the huge $4 bag of chips, a $2.50 soda and tries to sneak in a bunch of various candies and foods, which makes me pretty upset because I have to watch him argue with people who don't want to spend $7 on some random dude, but hey they keep wanting to be seen as helping a man down on his luck. He's here like 3 times a day, clearly taking advantage of those who don't know better.

I agree giving them money should be dissuaded, as you said, it only perpetuates their problem. It's a tricky issue. Who knows what it'll be like in the next couple decades.

In my city there was a proposal to build a shelter where they all hang out, but the problem is it's right in the center of the city so it got shot down because they don't want the surrounding property to lose value.

I don't think shelters are the answer
At least here in NYC shelters are notoriously shit
Constant violence, theft, accounts of rape, etc etc
And we're one of the highest tax cities in the country, yet we still have these problems in our shelters. I doubt anywhere else could do better.
I believe there are already programs for the homeless who seek it out to get jobs which lets them get money and eventually the ability to rent their own homes

I think you're right. The people on the streets, who are mentally ill, likely wouldn't be there if whatever illness they have was caught earlier on and properly treated.
