I don't think it is "on its way out" since its biggest competitors are probably twitter and instagram, and those don't offer all the functionality that Facebook does, though instagram is probably more in Facebook's market since a large part of Twitter is non-personal accounts shitposting at eachother. I would say, though, that Facebook is fulfilling its meme as an old person's home. Instagram has a younger, more "creative" culture, and Twitter is more about reacting to current events and making flash in the pan memes.
