We don't even have gigabit connections in the country, mate. The government in power thinks mobile wireless towers are a better solution to landline connections and that people who want connections with more bandwidth than what ADSL2+ offers only do it for torrenting movies and downloading porn.

We pay between 50 and 150 AUD a month for glorified ADSL connections that have data caps or heavy shaping/throttling on "unlimited" plans. For a few grand you can get a fibre connection set up at your house, if you own the property. Even then it depends on the provider and area. Very few areas are capable of achieving anything over 100 megabit up/50 megabit up, even if you happen to be in some of the small pockets which offer "fibre" connections.
