You can take the most intelligent people on the planet, if they haven't learned what's on the exam they'll fail it. An exam is not a measurement of raw intelligence, it's a measurement of how well you know your stuff. If you think "the best school in the country" only accepts the best people in the country, you are very naive. The best school in the country takes kids who know their stuff and who fit their expectations. Rich kids can afford to learn their stuff and to fit those expectations, that's why even one of average intelligence can get into an elite school. They can afford private tutors, private schools, they are infinitely more likely to have a stable and educated family, they can afford trips abroad and interesting internships and whatnot, they are exposed to more culture, knowledge and "successful" people since they were born. All that accounts a lot for how well they do at exams but it is also important when a school is considering your application. The best school in the country molds its idea of what an ideal student should be on rich kids, and rich kids are raised to fit the mold that elite institutions create for them.
The reality is elite school students are mostly people who family already came from an elite school, and when an "outside" manages to get into this little world of rich people, they don't do as good as people who were born into it.
This stuff should be obvious, it's like saying that everybody can run the race except some people start barefooted with a broken leg while others start with a bike. It's all rigged from the start.

The only way to be rich is to be lucky, or inherit the social, and economical capital.
