Yes, it's retarded. But actually I think it's because East Asia adopted European education systems in the mid to late 19th century and have since barely changed them, only to become more streamlined (braindead: multiple choice, fill in the box, meet these conditions, etc) and much less hours of study (still way too much for what they get out of it). The worst part is that after all that effort in the end they don't understand anything and quickly forget it all by the time they get out of school.
