there is special food at the pet store you can buy, canned food. its for cats that wont eat and you have to use a syringe to squirt it in the cats mouth but then it swallows by instinct. eventually once the cats back up to strength it should start eating on its own again.
its not just any can food though its special food designed to be used with a large syringe. not like the kind with a needle on it, you take the needle off the syringe

doesnt work. other cats just move in and fill the territorial vacuum left by the other cats. i looked into it because theres a lot of stray cats around, but catch and kill is never enough, the cats can outbreed any modest attempts at depopulation. you would be killing with no gain.
only catch, neuter, and release works. then you have sterile cats occupying territory that a more fertile cat could be living in. even when well fed the fixed strays will kill all the food in the area making it hard for the unfixed cats to move in.
but i also understand that some people are so filled with hatred that they just want an excuse to fulfill their sick fantasies of torturing small animals. and my words will fall on deaf ears there

Btw a not widely known fact about cats - cats MUST eat because of liver enzymes. Cat's liver is unable to reduce enzyme production, which means without food it starts to digest itself. Liver damage starts after 3 days with no food and starts to become untreatable after one week (these are averages).
The worst thing is, a cat with a failing liver loses appetite and then the only way to save the cat is to feed it by force (it can be done via IV in worst cases, what's needed are proteins that get eaten up by enzymes).
There are drugs that increase appetite, especially cyproheptadine, relatively safe for the liver.
