I'm fairly certain western culture in general is rather consistent with sex/gender being equivalent, it's not like anglos are the only people on earth slow to warm up to trans people
I'm aware different cultures have different perceptions of things (for example, in some cultures, the color we call "light blue" is considered a type of green rather than blue), but I think in any predominantly Christian-rooted culture, gender and sex aren't going to be differentiated.
