Keep in mind that from our perspective the Franco-'Prussian' war is only really important for half the country. The "German Empire" was mostly a Prussian state.

When you think about it, Prussia and Austria were really the only states that ever did something outside of gettign raped. Well that's the problem with Germany, it has too much of a "progressive" spirit, which causes very schizophrenic Sturm und Drang interpretations of what "progress" is.

One year it's welcoming all of North Africa into Europe (thanks to France killing Gaddafi), the next year it's gassing minorities. One year it's inventing the welfare state (thanks to Prussia), the next year is embracing corporatism and privatization. I would go so far to say that German history has been Trump for hundreds of years except when they've been occupied by foreign powers. Being occupied is kind of like taking benzos for the schizophrenia.
