Line formation is to mitigate losses from cannon balls. If you think about it, a cannon shoots in a straight line and decimates anything on that line. If you have a formation like pic related, you will lose entire rows of soldiers.

Normally in that era you would use a box formation against cavalry so that horsemen can't pick off thinly spread lone wolf defenders with sabres and shit.

Canadians are very smug people who brag about their supposed politeness and how this makes them superior to Americans. In fact it often seems the entire Canadian identity is resolved around being superior to Americans in spite of the fact Canadaian influence relies completely on partnership with the Americans.
