That's because an enemy plasma carbine also gave aim bonus in the first new XCOM. Also rookies are really shit unless they get promotion with stat progression. Old XCOMs were the same on that regard but you could send 10 operatives day one.

It's not only XCOM, I tried some other similar games and all were stupidly difficult, I'm not going to dedicate effort into playing a game, I have little time to play games so I'd rather play something where if I choose the normal difficulty I can actually play without having to play the first missions 10 times in a row to be lucky with my shots.

It's not that difficult desu. Turn based tactics are meant to be played with relaxed attitude to losing. It's the same as with roguelikes or soulsbourne games. So in theory they are like a puzzle game which gets easier with every attempt.

I can't take this from the start, if I'm losing a lot in the first missions I don't bother.
I have died a lot of times in some Dark Souls bosses for example, but at least they were supposed to be difficult and weren't the first one.
If I'm constantly dieing at the first things I give up.
And I can't understand the attitude of some developer of making things obligatorily hard, creating an easy difficulty is very easy to do, it doesn't hurt much just allow everyone to play, it doesn't affect the quality of the game for those who want a higher difficulty.
