They got expelled not because they owned land, but because they were landlords and refused to give up their land. They decided to be greedy pieces of shit and had absolutely no claim to "their land". Landlords are even seen as pests by the right. Plenty of former rich Cuban families decided to stay and then even had leading roles in their factories.
